Writing Assignment #7

Sobel, M.A. (May 2007). Something for everyone. Mathematics Teacher, 100(9), 584-587.

This article is written by the President of NCTM, and he is discussing his favorite article ever written in Mathematics Teacher. He starts by going through some of the his favorite articles he wrote. He hits some of the high points such as what is going right with mathematics through the years and what is decreasing in value. At the end of this article he makes the discovery that each new issue that comes out is his favorite. There is something for everyone in every issue, and he grows to love the new issue every time. He believes that as teachers read these articles they will find something each time that can benefit them as a math teacher.

As math teachers, we need to continue to learn. By reading the new research that is happening in mathematics education, we can learn new ideas to implement in our own classrooms. Our teaching style can never be perfect, but by continually searching for ways to improve we can get closer to perfect. Students will be able to tell if we are trying to find better ways to help them. Reading the Mathematics Teacher is one way to learn new ideas.

  1. It felt like there wasn't really a topic sentence. You summed up the article well, but it didn't seem that there was much direction to the paragraph. The tone was good, but it just felt like it lacked in direction.

  2. Bibliography feedback: you need a space between the M. and the A.; remove "May"; italicize 100.

I think I agree with Scott that the first paragraph is missing a topic sentence. It would be nice if I found out at the very beginning of the paragraph what the whole point of discussing favorite articles was. In other words, maybe a paraphrasing of the last sentence might work best as the beginning sentence for the first paragraph.

I thought that your second paragraph was much easier to read and follow. You have a clear topic sentence that describes your stance toward the article. You continue to develop and support that stance throughout the paragraph.

  3. I very much agree with your second paragraph. I think that the very act of reading articles, such as those from Mathematics teacher, gives teacher the opportunity to reflect upon their own teaching - an act which is vital for continued development and for the teacher to be able to adapt their teaching for their current students.

  4. I thought you summarized the paragraph well in the sense that I got a general feel for what the author wanted to convey. I was confused about the supporting points that lead up to this general message. I would like to know the purpose behind the author discussing his favorite articles that he wrote. I also didn't grasp the connection between the author's favorite articles and the discussing of high and low points of math.

  5. You did a fantastic job summarizing what the author's main points are and keeping your own ideas out of it until the second paragraph. It was structured, and professional-sounding. The only thing I have to suggest is that maybe you could have included more detail. Some examples would have been nice to include - like what some of the issues were that the president of NCTM was confronted with. Nice job on your post Alyssa!
